The 2 Reasons According to the Ancients as to Why Some of your Acupuncture Points have more Sensation then the Others.

Every acupuncture experience is unique. Even within the same person, day to day, or week to week. Just like results coming from a meditation practice, in one sitting there may be drastic healing of pain, emotion, energy, etc., or it may be subtle. The work is being done in the foundation and the roots, yet the stem and the flower may or may not be ready to bloom. Specifically regarding the experience of you laying on the table and how you feel during the Acupuncture process, we have two major explanations for why some points are felt and others not.

There are an infinite number of acupuncture points and infinite patterns of circulation within your body. A primary concern of Chinese medicine is improving the circulation of your life force Chi and Blood and Fluids. By improving this circulation your body can better heal itself. If one point is particularly painful, or sensational in someway, there is a specific purpose. Possible and very common sensations are feelings of pressure, pinching, hot or cold, a radiating sensation to an organ or up or down your arm or leg, muscle twitching and many more. All of these are strong responses, and very good signs that the body will respond with healing itself.

The first reason acupuncture points can be particularly sensational at times, is due to what we call “Excess” or “Shi.” This is when there is something of “Excess” in your system. For example emotion, thought, physical injury, stress, dryness, phlegm, even cold can be built up in one of your Meridians circulation. That excess buildup creates a blockage of your circulating Chi and Blood. These blockages are always occurring every day on either subtle levels, or more major levels. Preventative medicine is when we fix these blockages when they are still more subtle and non-problematic. This is easier and quicker. When symptoms are strong, blockages are obviously bigger and more long-standing. This takes more time to work out for a practitioner AND this is why it is better to work on yourself when problems are still in the early beginnings. So, the first reason for the acupuncture being more sensational, is that we are removing that blockage which is in direct analogy of removing a dam from a rivers circulation. It is good for the health of the river to have open flow, but the moment of removing the dam, the acupuncture point being “needled,” the back up of the pressure that the dam was creating needs to adjust. This is the cause of the sensation.

The second cause of acupuncture points being sensational, is due to a situation of “Deficiency” or “Xu” in Chinese medicine. It is essentially a vulnerability. Our body is full of certain resources. We are a container. We are a container of energy, blood, fluid, fire, water, essence. We have varying amounts of all of these. Some people can be deficient in energy, others can be deficient in blood. Hence, another reason we needle an Acupuncture Meridian is to bring more energy and blood to the Meridian that is deficient. That Meridian lacks the given substance. Because of its lack of fullness, it is energetically weak and so less tolerant of any change or stimulus. This lack of tolerance or vulnerability creates the point to be more sensational. Given time, calling more energy and blood to that area, the sensation goes away and it becomes almost sensation-less, or at least more quiet. In both “Excess” or “Deficiency” cases, with repeated treatment, and the persons symptoms being worked out, this will normalize the point to a more healthy response. This healthy response typically means a very mild cramping sensation or a very mild pressure that is healing but not dramatic as when there are definite issues.

Chinese medicine and acupuncture is a small example of more universal energetic principles. The things we talked about regarding medicine and the human body, also can translate into life of all forms in this world. Here, we’re talking about excess and deficiency in our body and how it makes a more dramatic experience for ourselves. To the same liking, in external life, similar assessments can be made and we can deduce as to why karma comes about. It is a highly developed a system of Energy observation. The energy within ourselves, our environments, and our relationships. Anything can be medicine and anybody can be a medicine man, given the right environment and right timing, because of all things being relative. Acupuncture, a treatment coming from Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a great way to benefit your body physically, emotionally and mentally. In Chinese Medicine, there is an 18 day period between the seasons, 4 times a year, where is it very beneficial to receive Acupuncture Treatment. There are certain energetic and physical changes that happen with our environment, but also within us as well. It is a time, as we shift from one season to another, one element to another, where we return to our Central, Earth, Digestive energy for 18 days. This is why this time is so good for treatment. Treatment during this time can help Clear the body of old patterns of poor health, habits, mental outlook, and emotional stagnations, as well as Support the body, so it can gracefully transition to the next phase of life easily, without hesitation or resistance. As we age significantly, a major difficulty we face in life is broken hips and shoulders. Yet, we do not need to be at that point in our lives to appreciate the health of these structures.  Your hip and shoulder girdles provide a tremendous amount of mobility for us in our lifetime. Due to our poor posture over a lifetime of work, stress which causes the muscles of the shoulders and hips to become extremely hard, dense and brittle, making for poor blood circulation through the area, our lack of or inappropriate exercise, stretching and diet, which will cause calcification of the joints and inflammation, the decline of these structures puts us in a very vulnerable state physically and mentally, creating a lack of graceful aging.  Ancient arts, like Tai Chi, one of the “great excellences” in China, emphasize the importance of these structures subtly and slowly over time stretching and strengthening, keeping them soft, open and young.  The energetic aspects of your hips and shoulders have a tremendous amount to do with your peace of mind, frustration, patience, the health of your cardiovascular system, lymph drainage, reproductive organs and immunity.
So, because of this deep understanding, what I suggest is developing a relationship with your shoulders and your hips, allowing them to talk to you!  When you consistently exercise, watch your diet and are curious about your body you will begin noticing signs and signals that your body is sending you. Signals such as tension knots, frustration, soreness, fatigue, and so on. This is not just cropped up to be the “human experience,” but these are all markers to what is happening in the body. If you become sensitive to these signs and signals you will begin to learn where your blockages are and how to correct your state. The simple things are always the best. Eating a well-balanced diet, staying hydrated, and not partaking too much in caffeine, alcohol and the like. In addition, for a person who wants to age with minimum suffering, an active routine is needed. These structures need to be stretched, strengthened, and rested. All three!  For deeper levels of opening and transformation, some modalities that are a tremendous catalyst would be acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, reiki and the like of bodywork. Tremendous self-care, would be yoga and tai chi.  There is no one route in caring for yourself. You must take full responsibility to explore and have that journey. It is a self realization, however certain people can help move you along more quickly. If you develop a conscious relationship towards your shoulder and hip health, you will maintain balance, harmony and good health throughout your years.  Bless You.

Dealing With Your Pain Effectively

Greetings All. Its my intention with this article to teach people how they can work with, understand and overcome painful conditions of the body. The first and most important thing to understand is creating an attitude of nonjudgement, as frustration and attachment to your pain can encourage a very short-lived support process. You should look at your pain as something that is temporary as all things in life change. The only question is how will you care for your pain and assist with its graceful and timely transformation.  To jump right in there are, at the very least, a handful of very helpful and practical ways of you dealing with your pain whether it is from muscular, tendinous, ligamentous, or bony origins.  These most effective methods that should be taken seriously, continuously, and consistently are soaking, massaging, stretching,  using, resting, acupuncture, chiropractic, reiki, and many other body works.

- Soaking -

When I say soaking, I mean once or twice a week in an Ebsen salt or Himalayan salt bath with 10 or 15 minutes of soaking your entire body. This can be highly effective to soften tissue relax tightness and Infuse cells with minerals.

- Massage –

Massaging means self-massage and therapeutic massage by a practitioner. There are many forms out there. Tai massage, Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, tui na massage. Exploration is encouraged don’t just try one method or one person but explore to find what feels best to you.

- Stretching –

Stretching is a thing that even the healthiest of us need to do every day or our body will slowly tighten and lose range of motion, thus being vulnerable to injury. This is one of the Yogis secrets to the fountain of youth. You must learn to stretch the injured area as well as your whole body every day maybe even more so when there is an acute problem. I recommend taking at the bare minimum some beginner yoga classes so that you can learn and incorporate stretching into your daily life at home or in the office.

- Using -

Using, I mean USE the area that is painful. One of the most common mistakes is that when something hurts people stop using it, and this is a mistake. If there is extreme pain with the possibility of further injury then by all means use it less so and more gently, but we need to keep moving otherwise stuck-ness will just keep being stuck and worsen. So, injured or painful areas should be used but maybe just to the level that you are able. Do not avoid completely using them otherwise acute conditions may become chronic and chronic conditions may worsen.

-Rest –

On the reverse side of the coin one should balance using with adequate rest for maybe 24 to 48 hours at a time. BUT!!!! rest should NOT be the primary way of looking for relief over any one of the other methods. During yoga class we may do some very intense exercises but those are always followed by one to several minutes of relaxation. It is the balance of Yin and Yang, all aspects of life.

- Acupuncture –

For pain acupuncture is one of the best modalities out there that is Acutually Healthy for you! For some it might work quickly getting 70 to 90% relief within three or four treatments while others it might be a stepwise slower process. However with consistent regular acupuncture treatment I am completely confident that you will be on the path of improving, growing and being healthier.

These are some very basic and great examples of primary, necessary and unavoidable ways of caring, nourishing and working with your pain. But it is not at all all encompassing. There are many other methods such as reflexology, chiropractic, cranial sacral, reiki, and other energy work personal and professional, but these are some great starts. No one of the above methods should be solely relied upon. Rather they should all be used in a cyclical manner. Maybe twice a week you massage the affected area, maybe 1 to 2 times a week you doing an Epsom salts bath, maybe twice a week to once every two weeks or even monthly you get acupuncture and massage treatments. You constantly use the affected area testing the limits and checking your improvement as well as resting it for one or two days in a row at a time with not doing anything.

To emphasize again one of the most important ideas is to use all these tools we know to heal ourselves, but without being attached to your pain as something that you cannot deal with, work through, or even use as a life lesson for growth. Do not be discouraged or encouraged by the rate and levels of improvement possibilities, and don’t let that affect your continuous work that you’re going to do and the work that you’ve already done. Just trust that healing will happen in its own time. Some things are very quick to change other things very slow, some things randomly and spontaneous. We cant always know, rather, just keep doing the work, trying same things and new things and walk your path. Be neutral, continue to use these ideas as well as others and in the right amount of time for you I’m certain you’ll start to improve and eventually overcome some life limiting or uncomfortable states.
